Co-operative societies in Russia as well as in other countries appeared as a result of capitalist transformation and destruction of communes.
Co-operative societies in Russia had a specific character due to the national communal organization and collectivist psychology.
Co-operative societies played the role of shock-absorbers in the process of the forming a new economic mechanism: they assisted people in adapting to market. That is why they were and remain a substantial element of market infrastructure.
The role and position of new consumer's co-operative societies in going out of crisis both in a town and a village, in making goods cheaper for the consumer, their close co-operation with a cridit union with that end in view and the reasons impeding the consumer's co-operative societies development all these problems are under consideration.
